I've just changed the battery on my Ford Mondeo.
I thought I could keep the radio working, by keeping the old battery connected (two lengths of wire), until the new one was connected up.
Unfortunately, it didn't work , and the radio is now asking for an unlocking code.
How do I go about getting an unlocking code

I'm not sure about Ford, but with most cars I've had it's been on a credit card sized card in the owners wallet / manual.

If you've got all the paperwork for the car i.e the service book & manual you should find a little card with the code on, if not and you bought the car second hand from a garage some have been known to write the code on the radio casing somewhere so that when they take the radio out whilst the car is on the forecourt for security they have the code easily to hand when they sell the car. Otherwise I think it might be an expensive trip to your local Ford Dealer to get the code.

Bob, you might be able to get the code via this thread:

I've every scrap of documentation for my car (Rover) but no code. I needed the code after a battery check. I was still in touch with the first owner but as you're advised to keep the code separate from the vehicle, he'd kept it separate from the vehicle, & mislaid it.
I booked a service at the dealership the car came from. I asked about the code, they said sure and they entered the code to reset the radio. Unfortunately they neglected to give me the code and I drove away assuming it was in the service paperwork. It wasn't. I telephoned, they said, sorry, that'll be (I think) £30, and you'll need to turn up in person with documents including photo ID. Well I've an old-school driving licence without a photo, so I'd have to dig out my passport.
So in summary, turning up in person, presenting a passport, proof of ownership, £30, all for a 4-digit number. It's a kind of Soviet-style sub-economy here, bureaucracy for nothing and money changing hands for something of no inherent value. You might as well buy a new radio.

Very often with car radios there are two different codes. One is just the code for the one radio in your car, and the second is a generic code which will unlock any radio of that particular make! I would guess that the dealer in your case probably used the second one because he wouldn't have to look anything up. The code you want is obviously the first one; there's no way a dealer would give you the second!

How do I go about getting an unlocking code

You need to get the radio serial number from the label on the top or back of the radio.
Enter it into a code check software such as found at ..
    http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2&searchstring=ford+calculator
    try.
    ford_calc.zip
ford_LCA.rar (many unzip programmes cope with rar files)
etc. - some of the listings don't work but one of them should give you the 4 digit code. You will need the radio handbook to see how to enter the code. ford radio handbooks can usually be found on-line.
If you want to take the risk, I've put the two programmes i used around 5 years ago on my web page for a short period as a zip file (ford.zip)
    http://www.admac.myzen.co.uk/ford_radio_code/
If you download and unzip the files you should find
    FordM.exe
    Ford_L+c.exe
After unzipping, if you double click on these they should just open and start up
For your own safety first run a virus check on them

If the code is not in the handbook which it should be, a dealer will be able to get the code for you. Ford have a database of registration vs audio code that the dealer can lookup.
