Last Hearth Game Of Thrones
Though eagle-eyed Game of Thrones fans have had fun over the years picking out tiny differences here and there in the HBO show’s recognizable and highly informative opening credits, the map-based sequence has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 2011. Until now. In these final episodes, the whooshing tour through Westeros and beyond has become much more focused and in depth, racing through the interiors of both King’s Landing and Winterfell. So is this just Game of Thrones flexing in its final stretch? Well, yes and no.

It’s worth noting right away that the show’s opening credits sequence, which has always played the informative role of clueing in viewers as to where the episode’s action will take place, still has some vital information to deliver in this Season 8 premiere. In addition to its in-depth tour of King’s Landing and Westeros, we visit a new spot on the map: Last Hearth. This is the ancestral home of House Umber, and last season Jon warned that if the Wall came down, it would be the first spot the White Walkers would hit. Last Hearth is currently run by Northern cutie little Ned Umber, while the slightly southeastern Karhold is headed by Sansa Stark mini-me Alys Karstark.

Last Hearth’s appearance in the opening credits helps clear up some confusion over where the hell, exactly, Dolorous Edd and the remains of the Night’s Watch are when they meet up with Tormund and Beric Dondarrion. They’re at Last Hearth and all together when they find the gruesome message the Night King left them: little Ned pinned to the wall of the castle. It’s just one of many callbacks to Season 1, Episode 1: “Winter Is Coming.”
But other than Last Hearth, this new opener focuses almost exclusively on Winterfell and King’s Landing. With the Wall a shambles and Dany no longer bumming around in Essos, it’s no surprise that the designer, Angus Wall, was tasked with filling up the intro time a bit more creatively. In other words, we will no longer be zooming around the map like we used to on Game of Thrones this season; instead the action will be settled almost exclusively in these two major locales. In fact, most of the action in this week’s episode took place at Winterfell with a brief detour down to King’s Landing, where Cersei is keeping many, many secrets. (There may be some other fun exceptions later this season, which you can read about here.
This deeper dive inside the wall of Winterfell is also a nice parallel with the final season itself. Sure, there may be fewer episodes (only six!), but most of them are much longer than usual (nearly 70 minutes!). So a tighter, more in-depth focus all around for Season 8? Bring it on.
